The Intensivist

This fragile boy knows only pain
Lungs constricted, convulsing in flames
By the fight for survival and the yearning to live in an unjust world
Surrounded by men in white
Lying half dead under cruel fluorescent lights
Needles tap in sustaining life
Chemicals mix and reality blurs
A new infection revealed by radiation
That grows deep inside, taking formation
The men peer inside the crystal ball suspended on the screen
A small battle won in this grim episode
Having cheated death once, but his insides corrode
To the tune of the dark siren’s beckoning scream
Gasping alone in my death bed
No time left, minutes have fled
Suffocate, taken by disease
Urging me, by death’s grip I’m seized
Reaching serenity, a dreamlike escape
Free from affliction in my unconscious state
I know what awaits: my prison of pain
A hopeless existence, I’m thrown back again
Death looms, attracted to the boy
“And if thou aren’t willing, then force I’ll employ”

Ghost of Joy
07:08

An obsidian letter is sewn upon your mouth
To keep your secrets in and to shut your excess out
You’re stricken pale with terror but you mustn’t make a sound
The silence rings with every tear that melts into the ground
I’ve seen the torpid grayness bind into you
It sings your bitter-sounding psalms aloud
I’ve seen the ghost of joy writhe within you
Encapsulation of felicity
The ghost of joy
Looms and destroys
Devotion now flickers in and out of focus
Interest like a moth, eyes red and dry with smoke
Held in a white formless chasmic dominion
Attached until the afterlife shatters under reason
I’ve seen the sacramental anguish in you
It boils your immaculate grace
I see the ghost of joy carve into you
And saturate your dying felicity
Haunting and pushing for relapse
Dead eyes flaking
Your life is obsolete
And wasted

Be Still
10:53
|

Tranquility blooms over face, above nerves
Melting deep into our skin
Sinks a cold, dark pertinent ease
The anxiety paralyzes
Be still
Be eager to lay rest
Be faceted with iron strength for your body’s one last breath
Be still
Abeyance, come what may
I will plummet through olive eyes to find them scorched with grey
Your insomnia for life will only last so long (Your poise falls)
Breathe in, fall in trance, and your world is gone
Choke yourself on Ambien and lysis of thought
Until your lungs fill with fumes of the umbrage you’ve sought
The silence conceived perturbs us with its sound (It’s so loud)
Upon the slow submergence, we help each other drown
The struggle is a game your fear plays with your mind
You fall into slumber and you close your eyes
The great urge, the massive downpour
Of faith and of endearment
Escape mortality when blackness sets in
Exhaustion comes with the years of waiting
Be calm, gently
Be still and sleep
Regress slowly
Be still now
